"Beneath" (2013) starring Jeff Fahey on Netflix. I've always said that
I have a deep appreciation for any horror film that can go a great
distance into the running time without any elements of spookiness, yet
still keeps me riveted. I think often times the best horror films are
the ones that build up the characters in a dramatic fashion and then
drop the boom on them late in the game. "Beneath"
is a film that was going down that very road. The first 45 minutes I
was completely drawn into the plight of Jeff Fahey and his fellow miners
(including his daughter) who find themselves trapped inside a caved-in
mine (in fact, if all the film was was their survival story, I'd have
been completely okay with that). But as soon as the supernatural
elements started creeping into the film, it completely lost me. You get
scene after scene of characters suddenly getting possessed (which
entailed their eyes turning white and having droopy mouths), attacking
someone, then becoming un-possessed just as quickly. None of it was in
any way scary and I was left shaking my head at such a wasted great
first half with good performances all around. To me, "Beneath" is the
kind of horror film that would've benefited by NOT being a horror film.
6 out of 10 for me.
