"Spookies" (1988)

Watched "Spookies" (1988) again for the first time in over 25 years. Knowing the film is a patchwork of new footage edited in (almost half the movie in fact), I was trying to see if I could figure out which scenes were by which director during this viewing. Afterwards, I looked it up & sure enough I was right in that all the scenes with the evil magician, the girl in the coffin and the strange cat-man were all added in after the fact. The cat-man in particular is pretty obvious, as there are these constant shots of him appearing on the other side of doors to rooms that the characters from the initial shoot are in, but never interacting with them. I almost wish there was a director's cut by the original filmmakers to see how the story was supposed to originally pan out. Truthfully though, because "Spookies" is so disjointed and schizophrenic in it's storytelling that I think there in lies the charm of it. Even without any idea of what is going on, it's a non-stop barrage of some great 1980's low-budget monster effects and you can't ask for anything more than that! 6 out of 10 for me.
